7 safety instructions for industrial lubricant manipulation
Most of the investigations that appear after an industrial accident show that such events could have been avoided if the employees had ben conscious about the potential dangers that they expose themselves to if they don't properly respect the security standards.
In any field of the industry, the understanding of safety measures when it comes to using industrial lubricants should be a number 1 priority for all employees. Please see below a list of the 7 main safety measures that you need to keep in mind when it comes to manipulating, depositing and using industrial lubricants.
1. Manipulating oil tanks
Given the fact that an oil tank weighs over 200 de kg, it needs to be handled carefully because, once out of control, such a tank can cause accidents. The main rule is that you need to be careful and maintain stability of the tank during any manipulating action.
2. Pay attention to oil drops
Oil or grease drops on the floor represent a big slipping or fire danger. Any leak you see must be removed immediately using absorbing materials after you check the cause of the leak. It is possible that some equipment has defects or the manipulation of industrial lubricants was not made in accordance with safety rules.
3. Dangers for the skin
Skin may present sensitivity when exposed longer to some lubricants, like cutting fluids. To avoid irritation and skin eruptions, wear rubber gloves when necessary and wash the areas frequently exposed with warm water and soap. Also, avoid wearing oily clothes and make sure you get first aid in case of scratches and cuts. The exposure of such wounds to oils can render them more severe.
4. Lubricating industrial equipment
Do not add lubricants while the machinery still functions unless they are central lubricating systems. In this case, carefully consult the safety measures presented in the equipment instructions manual and respect them to the letter.
5. Pay attention to the protection mechanisms
Before removing the protection mechanisms to lubricate a certain equipment, make sure it is off and during the lubrication it is labelled accordingly (”technical revision”). After lubrication, make sure that the protection mechanism is assembled properly before turning on the equipment to avoid possible accidents.
6. Pay attention to the protection equipment
Always respect the internal rules regarding proper protection equipment (protective footwear, helmet, glasses, gloves etc.). Also, do not wear baggy clothes that can get caught in the components of functioning industrial equipment.
7. Using utensils
Pay special attention to using utensils. Never improvise utensils by changing their configuration to use them for other purposes than those they were created for. Never forget about proper protection equipment according to the utensils you are about to use.
Apart from the above advice, make sure your employees always respect the internal protection rules so that industrial lubricant manipulation is carried out safely.
